Week 14 - From Sketch to Sentiment

This week's project is a vase from reclaimed barn wood with an inner acrylic liner. And you were expecting something with goat parts weren't you? Naaaaaaaaaaaaah, not this week.

I've had this idea rattling around in my head and sketchbook for over two years. The acrylic for the liner was actually purchased last Spring and finally got my attention from its stored nook in the shop. In college, I built tide pool aquariums with my brother and buddy, which proved to be helpful with the mixed bag of acrylic and wood this week. Trust me it's leakproof!

The joinery along the edges of the vase is a box joint. Simple, straightforward, unpretentious design. It's clever and solid like the dovetail but has much more humility.

And once again I gravitated towards the weathered, greying wood for this project. Rustic is definitely on trend, but to me it's much more than that. It reminds me of what my Nana used to say... "I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn grey and my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face." Creating this vase is almost like tracing her laugh lines with my fingers.

From sketch to sentiment.
